The protests come after the city passed a resolution on Tuesday, Oct. 10 expressing their support for Israel and condemning Hamas following the Saturday, Oct. 7 attacks on Israel.
Englewood was the first municipality in New Jersey to pass a resolution supporting Israel and condemning Hamas. A similar resolution passed in Teaneck also drew a large group of protesters.
Police on scene wore riot gear and face shields, as protesters were barricaded to each side. Pro-Palestinian supporters chanted "free free Palestine" while Pro-Israeli supporters expressed support for the more than 200 people taken hostage by Hamas.
Protesters were also inside the meeting room, holding up signs in support of both sides, though Israel was not on the agenda. The meeting was forced to end in the middle of public comment, upon the recommendation of Englewood Police Chief Thomas Greeley. Police escorted meeting attendees outside.
"I think we can all stand against terror," Aliza Solomon said during public comment. "No one wants to see murder and massacres. I admire you for your leadership."
